Not air travel, but we should count our blessings I had to pay a bribe (or more accurately, was extorted) in order to ride the train in Eastern Europe.   The conductor wanted hard currency and claimed that I had to pay a bribe because my ticket only paid to be on the train but not for the right to a seat. I said that I would stand but he then said that I would have to stand outside of the train as I was still taking up space inside the train.
